Book Review :: Black Cake
I’m definitely on Team #BlackCake. Sibling drama, layered, multi-generational family stories that flip b/w past and present timelines, love, and friendship plot lines - all things my book-loving heart appreciates! I love the idea of something as traditional as a baked item like the black cake - ultimately bringing the whole story together. The recipe is not written down but passed from mother to daughter over generations.
This book is the story of Covey and Gibbs, immigrants from the Caribbean who make their way to California, and the deeper story of what parts of their pasts they share with their children and even with each other. It left me thinking about the things inherited from my own family - physical mannerisms, emotional baggage, traditions surrounding holidays/events, even food that means ‘home.’
Bonus points for an amazing cover design.
