Book Review :: Upgrade by Blake Crouch
Upgrade by Black Crouch (☆ ☆ ☆ ☆)
This is one of those books I could see as a movie as I read. It’s fast-paced and easy to read. It’s definitely sci-fi, but has just enough family drama (complicated mother and sister relationships, for example) to make me feel a little more connected to the story.
The main character is Logan Ramsey, son of scientist Miriam Ramsey who killed millions with an experiment. Logan’s done his time for his part in his mother’s experiment and now works for the GPA: an organization against gene editing. He’s working a raid one night when he gets his own genes edited (upgrade!) and his life spirals out from there.
The action is intense as Logan becomes a different person, and has to grapple with what the concept of gene modification might mean in a changing world. My only critique is that Logan’s character - super hero or not - is a bit predictable!
TW: climate change, apocalypse, genetic modifications, violence
