A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross

I’m giving this one 4 stars! It definitely has a YA vibe to it - sounds like author has previously written in that genre, so that makes sense. Also, I still feel slightly duped that I didn’t realize it was the first in a series (trilogy?) and, as I approached the semi-cliffhanger type ending, still felt slightly annoyed. Series require commitment. 😂

synopisis: A River Enchanted is a book about a character named Jack, a bard who returns to his home (Cadence, an enchanted island) after many years away. Jack has a complicated relationship with the magic of the isle and with his mother, Miren. But when young girls start disappearing, Jack returns home to help find them.

He reunites with Adaira and Torin, childhood enemies/frenimies. Torin in now the captain of the guard for the isle and must protect it from their enemies to the west. Adaira is the heiress and future laird of Cadence, and she and Jack have all the sparks! He also discovers he has a sister (surprise!) who is at risk of becoming one of the missing girls. Jack and Adaira must appeal to the spirits of Cadence to help solve the mystery of the lasses.

review: I think the author does an amazing job weaving together the storylines of these characters. Bonus points for females as leaders and decision makers working for peace. I also enjoyed the way the spirits - wind, earth, fire - are portrayed and their hierarchy as it relates to the storyline.

Read if you like: Children of Blood and Bone ❤️ (though we’re still waiting on book 3 of that one so… 😆😆❤️) or the Queen of the Tearling series (personal fav)
